SharePoint is a generic name given to the combination of two technology products.  The first being Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 (WSS3.0) which acts as a Solutions Platform.  The other product in the group is Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007) which provides extended services and features and sits on top of WSS 3.0

 

You can have WSS 3.0 without MOSS 2007, however you cannot have MOSS 2007 without WSS 3.0

 

WSS 3.0 is a free component of the Microsoft Windows Server Operating System where MOSS 2007 requires one or more licenses to be purchased for use.
